Container Brewing – Seawise Giant Imperial Stout

Container Brewing’s new imperial stout is our pour of the Week

The highly anticipated Container Brewing opened their doors on Franklin Street a couple weeks ago with eleven original beers on tap. Yes, you read that correctly. Eleven! Container has been pouring at select events to give craft beer fans a taste of what’s to come, but there’s something special about drinking it at the source.

I stopped by the brewery a couple days after they opened to check out the space and grab a quick flight. All four beers that I sampled were really solid, but the one that blew me away was the Seawise Giant Imperial Stout.

Imperial Stouts are often highly sought after as days get shorter and the weather dips closer to freezing. Let me paint you a picture…warm fireplace, comfy couch, cozy sweater, streaming site of choice, and your favourite boozy stout. It’s basically a perfect evening.

The one slight hesitation (emphasis on slight) that I’ve had with some imperial stouts is that the finish can be too harsh. I find that this can mask some of the flavours and make it more difficult to fully enjoy the complexities of the beer.

The Seawise Giant Imperial Stout from Container Brewing’s head brewer, Tim Juul, is very easy-drinking for the style. I was actually taken aback when I had my first sip considering it weighs in at 11.2 percent. Don’t take the drink-ability for granted though, as it most definitely still packs a punch.

Seawise Giant has a delicious, rich flavour profile from the roasted malts used in the brewing process. The addition of cocoa nibs provides decadent chocolate notes and a subtle, warming nudge of alcohol comes through on the finish. I think I just found my new go-to imperial stout!

Seawise Giant is available on tap, in Growler fills, and in 473ml cans (both four packs and singles) at Container Brewing. Single cans are only $4.50, which is a steal for an imperial stout of this caliber. I’ll definitely be picking up a few more cans for the holiday season to pair with Jingle All the Way and my mom’s homemade cookies.

Container Brewing is located at 1216 Franklin Street, Vancouver, BC. You can learn more about them here.
